Purchase one of 1st World Library's Classic Books and help support our free internet library of downloadable eBooks. Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - THE characteristic of a revolutionary country is that change is a quicker process there than elsewhere. As the revolution recedes into the past the process of change slackens speed. Russia is no longer the dizzying kaleidoscope that it was in 1917. No longer does it change visibly from week to week as it changed in 19l8. Already, to get a clear vision of the direction in which it is changing, it is necessary to visit it at intervals of six months, and quite useless to tap the political barometer several times a day as once upon a time one used to do. . . . But it is still changing very fast. My jourrnal of "Russia in 1919,"while giving as I believe a fairly accurate pictureof the state of affairs in February and March of 1919, pictures a very different stage in the development of the revolution from that which would be found by observers today. The prolonged state of crisis in which the country has been kept by external war, while strengthening the ruling party by rallying even their enemies to their support, has had the other effects that a national crisis always has on the internal politics of a country. Methods of government which in normal times would no doubt be softened or disguised by ceremonial usage are used nakedly and justified by necessity.

"Hugh Brogan writes in his Introduction- `Ransome in large part lived through his correspondence. He wrote letters as easily as we make phone calls (He did not possess a telephone until he was in his fifties). Their language is still vital with his character. Hundreds survive and add up to a literary achievement that deserves to be put in print as much as his stories for children. We seem to come especially close to the man writing. . . and because of the letters'spontaneity, I have let them compose themselves into a portrait of the writer in all his boyisness, his energy, his intellegence, his geniality (and his fretfulness)and the immense variety of his skills and interests'. Brogan says he has `tried to be as light-hearted an editor as possible producing `a reader-friendly selection rather than a definitive edition of documents'. He begins with Ransome in St Petersburg at the start of the Great War in 1914, and includes a breif commentary as well as some of the drawings with which Ransome decorated his correspondance."

This is the first publication of a book by Arthur Ransome, originally commissioned in 1910. The manuscript, nearly complete, was sequestered by Ransome's wife in 1914, and he never saw it again. It came to light only by chance, long after his death. Arthur Ransome here gives an exceptionally personal and perceptive account of the strengths and weaknesses of Stevenson as man and writer. Writing when most books on Stevenson were biographical or merely adulatory, he intended his to be the first 'critical study'. Here Ransome wrestles to identify techniques that later underpin his Swallows and Amazons. Moreover, this is the only manuscript first draft of a work by Ransome to survive, and as such provides a unique insight into his working methods. The appendices include all other extant material relating to Stevenson by Ransome, from his very first story (written at the age of eight, and hitherto published only privately) to working notes and articles in literary periodicals. The editor's introduction gives an account of the history of the manuscript's development, disappearance, and rediscovery, and adds a new chapter to the tumultuous story of Ransome's first marriage, early career, and escape to Russia.

Arthur Ransome began to fish as a boy in the Lake District, but the pursuit became almost an obsession when he lived in Russia during World War I and reported the Revolution and its aftermath for the Daily News and the Manchester Guardian. When he returned to England with Trotsky's secretary as his wife, he settled in Lakeland and began his four-year weekly column Rod and Line for the Guardian, stopping only to write the twelve Swallows and Amazons books for children which made him famous. Although he published a few of these and other fishing essays in two books, Rod and Line and Mainly about Fishing, most of his writing and broadcasting on the subject has never appeared in book form.

This book describes the economic, social and political situation Arthur Ransome saw during his visit to Russia in February and March of 1919. Underlining the description of these events is the wrenching famine in Russia caused by the Civil War. In this work Ransome interviews several prominent members of the Soviet government as well as ordinary citizens of Soviet Russia. While Ransome's support of the Soviet society is evident in his critical but encouraging look at this new government struggling through a civil war.
