The four sublime qualities (brahma viharas) that can be cultivated through practice and lead to a life lived with wisdom and love. Also known as the "four immeasurables," they are metta, karuna, mudita, and uppekha,or kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. Many people are familiar with metta,or lovingkindness, meditation, which has become very popular in the last couple decades. But, according to Christina Feldman, to focus on that quality--delightful as it is--is to leave the practice somewhat unbalanced. The four qualities in fact help and balance each other in a way that enhances them all. Christina presents teachings on the brahma viharas along with simple practices that can lead to a life infused with kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, and to a way of being that promotes those qualities in the world at large.

This collection of essays explores the affinities between curriculum theory, hermeneutics, and ecology. Some of the historical origins of modernist curriculum, such as the work of Rene Descartes, Immanuel Kant, and Jean Piaget, are critiqued. The work of major figures in the interpretive paradigm, such as Ludwig Wittgenstein, Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, and Hans-Georg Gadamer, are used to unearth a more generous, more ecologically sane understanding of curriculum and our lives with children."

This innovative introduction to research in the social sciences guides students and new researchers through the maze of research traditions, cultures of inquiry and epistemological frameworks. It introduces the underlying logic of ten cultures of inquiry: ethnography; quantitative behavioral science; phenomenology; action research; hermeneutics; evaluation research; feminist research; critical social science; historical-comparative research; and theoretical research. It clarifies conceptual and intellectual traditions in research, and puts researchers firmly in the investigative saddle - able to choose, justify, and explain the intellectual framework and personal rationale of their research.

Little Women’s “Marmee” is one of the most recognizable mothers in American literature. But the real woman behind the fiction—Louisa May Alcott’s own mother, Abigail—has for more than a century remained shrouded in mystery. Scholars believed that her papers were burned by her daughter and husband, as they claimed, and that little additional information survived. Until now. When Abigail’s biographer and great-niece Eve LaPlante found a collection of letters and diaries in an attic trunk and began exploring the Alcott family archives, a window opened onto the life of this woman who has for too long been hiding in plain sight. These discoveries, and others, inform LaPlante’s groundbreaking new dual biography, Marmee & Louisa, a companion volume to My Heart Is Boundless. No self-effacing housewife, Abigail was a passionate writer and thinker, a feminist far ahead of her time. She taught her daughters the importance of supporting themselves and dreamed of a day when a woman, like a man, could enjoy both a family and a career. Here at last, in her own words, is this extraordinary woman’s story, brought to the public for the first time. Full of wit, charm, and astonishing wisdom, Abigail’s private writings offer a moving, intimate portrait of a mother, a wife, a sister, and a fierce intellect that demands to be heard.

“Long on helpfulness and honesty . . . a way of making the daunting, and much needed, practice of forgiveness seem easier and more inviting.”—Publishers Weekly Madeline Ko-i Bastis is a Buddhist chaplain. She works with cancer, AIDS, psychiatric, and Alzheimer’s patients, with battered women, caregivers, inmates, with people with addictions, as well as so-called normal people. In her work she has found that the most difficult thing for people to do is to grant forgiveness. Some people cannot ask for forgiveness, others cannot forgive one another. And some don’t realize how harsh they are when they cannot forgive the one person they have to live with daily—themselves. Heart of Forgiveness helps readers reflect on what forgiveness really means and how it can heal their lives and relationships. Ko-i Bastis explores the difficult emotions that keep us from forgiving and offers tools to help us overcome them. The three parts of Heart of Forgiveness mirror the phrases of the Buddhist Forgiveness practice: For all the harm I have done to others, knowingly or unknowingly, forgive me. For all the harm others have done to me, knowingly or unknowingly, I forgive you as much as I can. For all the harm I have done myself, knowingly or unknowingly, I forgive myself. Each section includes stories of forgiveness, a meditation, guided imagery, and other exercises to help understand forgiveness and letting go.

An excellent book for people interested in meditation, from beginners to advanced. The practice of meditation leads to a mind that is more peaceful, tranquil, and at ease. Because the mind is more relaxed, events that usually disturb us seem to take on less importance, and we stop taking them in such a serious way. Likewise, through meditation the mind gradually learns to be independent of external conditions and circumstances, discovering its own stability and tranquility. A stable mind leads to the experience of less suffering in our lives.
