The book explores a number of debates about young children and multimedia, with particular reference to video games. It places issues of gender centrally in relation to game play and develops a relational approach to game play using an account of affect. The book places games in a global context and argues that we should not think of the economic relations as somehow remote from what happens in the micro relations of playing. It moves towards a relational approach to subjectivity and explores central issues of violence and parental regulation.

Historically, children were often understood in relation to their development towards adulthood, but the 'new paradigm' of childhood studies has since shown how they should be taken more seriously as active participants in their own lives. Studying childhood is not just a question of research on children, but increasingly a practice of research with them. With this 'new paradigm' having now come of age, Sally McNamee offers a comprehensive overview of the current state of childhood studies and its history. Taking a thematic approach, she looks at how issues such as rights and citizenship, the state, the family, school, work, leisure, health and globalisation shape and are shaped by children. The Social Study of Childhood is an accessible introduction for students from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds such as childhood studies, sociology, psychology, social work and education. With reflection points for discussion and suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter, it is an engaging and stimulating account of how and why children's voices deserve to be heard in today's world.

Video Games & Your Kids is for parents who are worried that their children may be spending too much time playing video games. Based on research and the authors' clinical experience, the book explains what gaming addiction is, how much gaming is too much, and the affects gaming has on the body and brain. The authors give gaming advice on each stage of life; birth-2 years, ages 2-6, elementary school years, adolescence, and adult children still living at home. Where there is a problem, the authors provide parents with tools that will help the them successfully set appropriate limits for their children.

This compendium of articles about human development covers the life span, considering physical, cognitive, psychosocial, and spiritual components ... As you explore this anthology, you will discover that many articles ask questions that have no answers ... [However], this anthology is dedicated to seekers of knowledge and searchers for what is true, right, or lasting. To this end, articles have been selected to provide you with information that will stimulate discussion and that will give your thoughts direction, but no articles that tell you what to think.-Pref.

Every chapter defines the nature of the social problem in a global context as well as U.S. The text explores each of the three major theoretical explanations (in a balanced manner), describes the consequences of the problem, and provides alternatives solutions and policies. In the midst of this macro analysis the authors use pedagogy to bring the micro application alive, e.g. The Human Side and Self and Society so that the students can apply and understand the social problem.
