A New York Times Notable Book of the Year When Marion Winik fell in love with Tony Heubach during a wild Mardi Gras in New Orleans, her friends shook their heads. For starters, she was straight and he was gay. But Marion and Tony's impossible love turned out to be true enough to produce a marriage and two beautiful sons, true enough to weather drug addiction, sexual betrayal, and the AIDS that would kill Tony at the age of thirty-seven, twelve years after they met. In a memoir heartbreaking and hilarious by turns, Marion Winik tells a story that is all more powerful for the way in which it defies easy judgments. As it charts the trajectory of a marriage so impossible that it became inevitable, First Comes Love reminds us—poignantly indelibly—that every story is a special case.

When a boy and a girl meet and fall in love, they get married and have a family! Or, they don't. Often our stories mix love, marriage, and family in ways that don't often get told in playground rhyme. Sometimes people get married and never have children. Sometimes people have children without getting married. By disentangling love, marriage, and children, 'Happily Ever After!' creates more space for diverse and authentic stories about how our families actually come together.

When a child is conceived from sexual intercourse between a married, heterosexual couple, the child has a legal father and mother. Whatever may happen thereafter, the child’s parents are legally bound to provide for their child, and if they don’t, they’re held accountable by law. But what about children created by artificial insemination? When it comes to paternity, the law is full of gray areas, resulting in many cases where children have no legal fathers. In Papa’s Baby, Browne C. Lewis argues that the courts should take steps to insure that all children have at least two legal parents. Additionally, state legislatures should recognize that more than one class of fathers may exist and allocate paternal responsibility based, again, upon the best interest of the child. Lewis supplements her argument with concrete methods for dealing with different types of cases, including anonymous and non-anonymous sperm donors, married and unmarried women, and lesbian couples. In so doing, she first establishes different types of paternity, and then draws on these to create an expanded definition of paternity.

Best Advice on Life after Baby Arrives presents tried-and-true, practical tips for moms, from moms. Addressing a mother's needs and issues - from how to deal with the inevitable exhaustion, to reconnecting romantically with her husband, to carving out time for herself - this book provides comfort, reassurance and inspiration to women facing the demanding first months after the baby arrives. "I ended up having panic attacks right after I had my first baby, because I didn't see a light at the end of the tunnel. Well, here I am with four kids now, and I can tell you it does get better. What you're going through isn't what things will always be like. Don't let anyone, especially yourself, make you feel guilty for doing something for yourself." "Get up 30 minutes earlier than everyone else and make it clear to everyone in the house that this is your time." "As long as your baby has food in her belly, clothes on her back, and is not overly wet, then that time is yours. You don't need to get in the habit of holding the baby all the time. Babies also need to learn to become independent - they need to know that someone doesn't need to hold them all the time."
