A heartbreaking story of family secrets from the USA Today bestselling author of Gracie’s Secret. Perfect for fans of Jodi Picoult and Diane Chamberlain. I know you. I know you in a way you can’t even imagine. I have been searching for you in the years since you wrote that letter – the letter that told me you were looking for me too. But now that I’ve found you, I don’t know if I can tell you the truth of what happened. It would ruin your perfect life. It would risk your beautiful daughter. So, I watch and I wait – longing to protect you from what’s to come. This morning, you’re running late and your little girl, tugged by the hand, scurries to keep up with you. She’s clean but a little scrawny. Maybe that’s because you struggle with the bills; maybe she’s just made that way. I know what it is to have lost a precious child. What is it like to be a teen with depressed addicts for parents, a mentally ill sister, and a grandfather who killed himself? In this moving, compelling diary, Mariel Hemingway writes as her teen self to share her pain, heartache, and coping strategies with young readers. “I open my eyes. The room is dark. I hear yelling, smashed plates, and wish it was all a terrible dream.” Welcome to Mariel Hemingway’s intimate diary of her years as a girl and teen. In this deeply moving, searingly honest young adult memoir, actress and mental health icon Mariel Hemingway shares in candid detail the story of her troubled childhood in a famous family haunted by depression, alcoholism, mental illness, and suicide. Born just a few months after her grandfather, Ernest Hemingway, shot himself, Mariel’s mission as a girl was to escape the desperate cycles of debilitating mental health that had plagued generations of her family. In a voice that speaks to young readers everywhere, she recounts her childhood growing up in a family tortured by alcoholism (both parents), depression (her sister Margaux), suicide (her grandfather and four other members of her family), schizophrenia (her sister Muffet), and cancer (mother). It was all the young Mariel could do to keep her head. She reveals her painful struggle to stay sane as the youngest child in her family, and how she coped with the chaos by becoming OCD and obsessive about her food. Young readers who are sharing a similar painful childhood will see their lives and questions reflected on the pages of her diary—and they may even be inspired to start their own diary to channel their pain. Her voice will speak directly to teens across the world and tell them there is light at the end of the tunnel. • A hugely important subject for millions (around 10% of Americans suffer from depression) of young adults who are perhaps growing up in families with mental illness, suicide, depression, schizophrenia, alcoholism, and depression, or who themselves suffer from it. • Very few memoirs speak directly to YA readers about mental illness, depression, and what it is like growing up in a troubled family. • Mariel Hemingway speaks honestly about her own experiences with depression, eating disorders, and OCD, and how she learned to overcome these issues.

Kealy Ryerson has everything a New York socialite could want: wealth, power, a devoted husband and loving children. She was at the salon, getting her hair done, when her cell phone rang and her life changed forever. It was her husband, a high-profile defense lawyer. Run! he said. Take the children and get out of the country. Go now. Trust no one. Within a half hour he was dead, shot down in the street as he left lunch with the district attorney. Kealy cannot run. Her apartment is under surveillance, and she can't get her passport or any money. Her credit cards have been cancelled. She's wanted by the police. She and her teen-age kids are on their own, on the streets, with only her wits to keep them alive - her wits, and some surprising new friends. Kealy is determined to discover who has done this to her and her family. She discovers that she has a invisible advantage--because without her fancy clothes and expensive make-up, her jewels and her hair stylist, no one recognizes her. Not the police, not her husband's partner, not her best friends. A poor woman of a certain age is someone that no one really looks at. But she can watch them. She can follow them. She can use their blindness against them, and walk invisible among the people who want her dead. Invisible Woman I to I: Invisibility to Invincibility A woman is not an object of study but a subject of realization. Invisible Woman is the heartbeat of Jay's Legacy, a Not For Profit Organization I have established in my late wife's honor. This book is about the Power of Woman. A woman, who is in possession of unique strengths and subtleties such as instinct, intuition, imagination, etc, should never be in a position to lose her sense of pride and value. Unfortunately, due to inner forces, including her capacity to place her loved ones before herself, as well as external societal forces and collective psychology, many times a woman is affronted with doubts regarding her purposefulness and contexuality in relation to her family. Based upon thousands of interactions with female patients, I have analyzed eight basic categories, based upon personality traits, which lend themselves to feelings of invisibility in women: The Merger - The Pleaser - The Defeated - The Doubter - The Masochist - The Martyr -The Exasperated - and The Lost. Each category contains pointed illustrations from patients who exemplified those behavioral characteristics. I take the reader through each of these categories and show how to recognize them, and more importantly, tackle the more pertinent question of what a woman should do if she suffers from the fear or feeling of being invisible. My intention is to help a woman to increase her sense of awareness and self realization, thus ultimately positioning herself as a vital force: a source of energy to mankind. This book also attempts to inspire men to recognize and appreciate the innate qualities of a woman, and in doing so, attain an emotional, intellectual and spiritual communion with a woman. Jagdish D. Charles Dickens and Nelly Ternan met in 1857; she was 18, a hard-working actress performing in his production of The Frozen Deep, and he was 45, the most lionized writer in England. Out of their meeting came a love affair that lasted thirteen years and destroyed Dickens’s marriage while effacing Nelly Ternan from the public record. In this remarkable work of biography and scholarly reconstruction, the acclaimed biographer of Mary Wollstonecraft, Thomas Hardy, Samuel Pepys and Jane Austen rescues Nelly from the shadows of history, not only returning the neglected actress to her rightful place, but also providing a compelling portrait of the great Victorian novelist himself. The result is a thrilling literary detective story and a deeply compassionate work that encompasses all those women who were exiled from the warm, well-lighted parlors of Victorian England.

Book Excerpt: ...ad formerly held in his affections, and cease from a cruelty that would destroy her. "For I may die," wrote the hapless girl, "but marry another--never!" That single word, indeed, had sufficed to betray her secret, had it not been already discovered; as it was, it gave increased fury to Sir Peter, as his sister triumphantly pointed it out to him, for it need hardly be said that while the ink of the address was yet wet, and the seal still warm, Rosina's letter was carried to this lady. The culprit was summoned before them; what ensued none could tell; for their own sakes the cruel pair tried to palliate their part. Voices were high, and the soft murmur of Rosina's tone was lost in the howling of Sir Peter and the snarling of his sister. "Out of doors you shall go," roared the old man; "under my roof you shall not spend another night." And the words "infamous seductress," and worse, such as had never met the poor girl's ear before, were caught by listening servants; and to each angry speech of the baronet, Mrs.Close...
