First published in 1961 and out of print for more than forty years, visual design in -action is the summation of the influential graphic design theories and principles developed by Czech-born designer Ladislav Sutnar. A pioneering modernist in graphic design and typography, Sutnar brought his avant-garde design principles to the United States and became one of the most influential designers of the 1940s and 1950s. This book, a facsimile of the rare first edition, includes a new introduction by Steven Heller and shows how Sutnar's innovative approach to graphic design prefigured the informational structures now employed in contemporary web design.

In The Moderns, we meet the men and women who invented and shaped Midcentury Modern graphic design in America. The book is made up of generously illustrated profiles, many based on interviews, of more than 60 designers whose magazine, book, and record covers; advertisements and package designs; posters; and other projects created the visual aesthetics of postwar modernity. Some were émigrés from Europe; others were homegrown—all were intoxicated by elemental typography, primary colors, photography, and geometric or biomorphic forms. Some are well-known, others are honored in this volume for the first time, and together they comprised a movement that changed our design world.

An Examination of the Practice Through the Years Teaching the history of graphic design cannot simply be outlined by dates nor confined by places, but is defined by concepts and philosophies, as well as those who made, make, and inspire them. Teaching Graphic Design History is the first collection of essays, syllabi, and guides for conveying the heritage of this unique practice, from traditional chronologies to eclectic themes as developed by today’s historians, designers, scholars, and documentarians. Long overlooked within the broader history of printing and typesetting, when graphic design’s artifacts finally became the subject of serious study, the historian had to determine what was worthy and on what the history of graphic design should focus: the makers or the artifacts, the content or the context, or all of the above. With the author’s distinct viewpoint and many exclusive contributions, Teaching Graphic Design History chronicles the customs and conventions of various cultures and societies and how they are seen through signs, symbols, and the artifacts designed for use in the public—and sometimes private—sphere. Areas of focus include: Social and political effects of graphic design Philosophical perspectives on design Evolution of branding Development of the graphic design profession Predictions for the future of the practice An examination of the concerted efforts, happy accidents, and key influences of the practice throughout the years, Teaching Graphic Design History is an illuminating resource for students, practitioners, and future teachers of the subject.

**Finalist for the Thought and Criticism category of the FAD Awards 2019** This book traces the ideal of total environmental control through the intellectual and geographic journey of Knud Lönberg- Holm, a forgotten Danish architect who promoted a unique systemic, cybernetic, and ecological vision of architecture in the 1930s. A pioneering figure of the new objectivity and international constructivism in Germany in 1922 and a celebrated peer of radical figures in De Stijl, the Bauhaus, and Russian constructivism, when he emigrated to Detroit in 1923 he introduced the vanguard theory of productivism through his photography, essays, designs, and pedagogy. By following Lönberg- Holm’s ongoing matrix of relations until the postwar era with the European vanguards in CIAM and former members of the Structural Study Associates (SSA), especially Fuller, Frederick Kiesler, and C. Theodore Larson, this study shows how their definition of building as a form of environmental control anticipated the contemporary disciplines of industrial ecology, industrial metabolism, and energy accounting.

Graphic design is, now more than ever, a broad ranging discipline with rigorous demands for its practitioners. It requires a capacity and inclination for invention & rationality as well as an intuitive knack for human communication and cognition. Prague has often historically been at the center of innovative movements - including Art Nouveau, Constructivism & Functionalism - and it has certainly left its mark on all of the applied arts. The new Prague School is no exception, creating work that is fresh, inspired and communicative. Posters are graphically and socially vivid, and graphics for pamphlets, brochures and products are clean and outstanding. Work! is a refreshing compendium of the best student work in the vital genre of graphic design that highlights the individual achievements which reflect the sound tradition of the Czech style and its influence.
