Little Lord Fauntleroy (1885, 1886) by Frances Hodgson Burnett Is a beloved children's novel that made a huge impact on the 19th century public, shaping everything from boys' clothing fashions to copyright law. Cedric Errol is a generous, kind, and exemplary middle-class American boy who is suddenly found to be the heir of the Earl of Dorincourt. Saying loving goodbyes to his working-class friends, Cedric goes to England together with his mother to embrace his new fortune. His grandfather, the old earl, is a bitter old man ridden with gout and a foul temper, trusting no one. However the angelic boy elicits a profound transformation in the grandfather, which not only benefits the castle household but the whole populace of the earldom. If only the old man's heart would soften toward Cedric's estranged mother, the family would be healed at last. And when another potential heir to the earldom makes a claim, it seems that everything is lost.... But all things are possible through a child's innocent trust, true friendship, and unconditional love.

Frances Hodgson Burnett was an English–American playwright and author. She is best known for her children's stories. Her talent lay in combining realistic detail, including authentic accented dialog, with a romantic plot. She is best known for the three children's novels Little Lord Fauntleroy (1885–1886), A Little Princess (1905), and The Secret Garden (1911). Many of Burnett's books have long been forgotten. You can read them in this edition. Burnett often suffered from various illnesses, possibly brought on by the pressures of her career and her being the main financial source for the family. When her son Lionel died of consumption in 1890 she was beset by depression. She turned to Spiritualism, Theosophy, and Christian Science to assuage her grief, topics that would occur in her novels. Contents: - The Secret Garden - A Little Princess - Little Lord Fauntleroy - The Lost Prince - Editha's Burglar - Emily Fox-Seton - Being „The Making of a Marchioness“ and „The Methods of Lady Walderhurst“ - The Shuttle - Sara Crewe or What Happened at Miss Minchin's - A Lady of Quality - The Land of the Blue Flower - A Fair Barbarian - The Head of the House of Coombe - That Lass O' Lowrie's - Racketty-Packetty House, as Told by Queen Crosspatch - The Dawn of a To-morrow - T. "Little Lord Fauntleroy" – In a shabby New York City side street in the mid-1880s, young Cedric Errol lives with his mother in genteel poverty after the death of his father, Captain Cedric Errol. One day, they are visited by an English lawyer with a message from Cedric's grandfather, the Earl of Dorincourt, an unruly millionaire who despises the United States. With the deaths of his father's elder brothers, Cedric has now inherited the title Lord Fauntleroy and is the heir to the earldom and a vast estate. Cedric's grandfather takes him to live in England and be educated as an English aristocrat. "How Fauntleroy Occurred, and a Very Real Little Boy Became an Ideal One" is a story written by Frances Burnett in which she compared her famous creation Little Lord Fauntleroy and her youngest son Vivian. In many ways Vivian served as an inspiration for creating the fictional character Cedric Errol. Later in life he wanted to escape from those comparisons and separates himself from the fictional characters, but it was hard to shake them off.
