First published in 1943, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry has been translated into more than 250 languages, becoming a global phenomenon. The Sahara desert is the scenery of Little Prince’s story. The narrator’s plane has crashed there and he has scarcely some food and water to survive. Trying to comprehend what caused the crash, the Little Prince appears. The serious blonde little boy asks to draw him a sheep. The narrator consents to the strange fellow’s request. They soon become friends and the Little Prince informs the pilot that he is from a small planet, the asteroid 325, talks to him about the baobabs, his planet volcanoes and the mysterious rose that grew on his planet. He also talks to him about their friendship and the lie that evoked his journey to other planets. Often puzzled by the grown-ups’ behavior, the little traveler becomes a total and eternal symbol of innocence and love, of responsibility and devotion. Through him we get to see how insightful children are and how grown-ups aren’t. Children use their heart to feel what’s really important, not the eyes. Heart-breaking, funny and thought-provoking, it is an enchanting and endlessly wise fable about the human condition and the power of imagination. A book about both childhood and adulthood, it can be read as a parable, a war story, a classic children's fairy-tale, and many more things besides: The Little Prince is a book for everyone; after all, all grown-ups were children once.

Moral allegory and spiritual autobiography, The Little Prince is the most translated book in the French language. With a timeless charm it tells the story of a little boy who leaves the safety of his own tiny planet to travel the universe, learning the vagaries of adult behaviour through a series of extraordinary encounters. His personal odyssey culminates in a voyage to Earth and further adventures. Letter to a Hostage, which contains certain themes that were to appear in The Little Prince, is Saint-Exupery's optimistic and humane open letter to a Jewish intellectual hiding in occupied France in 1943.

And now here is my secret. It's very simple: One sees clearly only with the heart. The most important things are invisible to the eye.” (The Fox) When you look up at the sky at night, since I'll be living on one of them, since I'll be laughing on one of them, to you it will sound as if all the stars are laughing.” (The Little Prince) The Little Prince is a story written and illustrated by French writer, poet, and pioneering aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. First published in 1943, the book has since been translated into more than 250 languages and has become one of the best-selling books to date. The Little Prince is both for children due to its illustrations and imaginative fairy-tale quality and for adults (since they were children first) due to its several observations about life and human nature. The story tries to find out the secret to what is really important in life and urges us to read at many different levels of meaning, from fairy tale to deeper secrets of reality. Peter Sís's remarkable biography The Pilot and the Little Prince celebrates the author of The Little Prince, one of the most beloved books in the world. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was born in France in 1900, when airplanes were just being invented. Antoine dreamed of flying and grew up to be a pilot—and that was when his adventures began. He found a job delivering mail by plane, which had never been done before. He and his fellow pilots traveled to faraway places and discovered new ways of getting from one place to the next. Antoine flew over mountains and deserts. He battled winds and storms. He tried to break aviation records, and sometimes he even crashed. From his plane, Antoine looked down on the earth and was inspired to write about his life and his pilot-hero friends in memoirs and in fiction. In the spring of 1944, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry left his wife, Consuelo, to return to the war in Europe. Soon after, he disappeared while flying a reconnaissance mission over occupied France. Neither his plane nor his body was ever found. The Tale of the Rose is Consuelo’s account of their extraordinary marriage. It is a love story about a pilot and his wife, a man who yearned for the stars and the spirited woman who gave him the strength to fulfill his dreams. Consuelo Suncin Sandoval de Gómez and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry met in Buenos Aires in 1930—she a seductive young widow, he a brave pioneer of early aviation, decorated for his acts of heroism in the deserts of North Africa. He was large in his passions, a fierce loner with a childlike appetite for danger. She was frail and voluble, exotic and capricious. Within hours of their first encounter, he knew he would have her as his wife. Their love affair and marriage would take them from Buenos Aires to Paris to Casablanca to New York. It would take them through periods of betrayal and infidelity, pain and intense passion, devastating abandonment and tender, poetic love. Several times in the course of their marriage they would go their separate ways, but always they would return. The Tale of the Rose is the story of a man of extravagant dreams, and of the woman who was his muse, the inspiration for the Little Prince’s beloved rose—unique in all the world—whom he could not live with and could not live without. Written on Long Island in a quiet spell of reconciliation, The Little Prince was Antoine’s greatest gift to the woman he never stopped loving, the only child to emerge from their union. The Tale of the Rose is Consuelo’s reply—the love letter she never could write to her husband—a fable of its own, just as magical, poetic, and tragic as The Little Prince.

In this sympathetic yet penetrating study of a revered classic of children's literature, James E. Higgins examines the relevance of Saint-Exupery's active engagement in World War II, demonstrating that this most unusual man - who took part in adventures that few people will experience in their lifetimescould at the same time be everyman, communicating universal truths. By examining The Little Prince's simple style and imaginative motifs, Higgins reveals how this little fairy tale so powerfully teaches its lessons about pain, faith, and love and so compellingly asks us to turn inward to find answers to questions of responsibility - to "see with our hearts".

When French writer and aviator Antoine de Saint- Exupery flew off alone into a July night in 1944 and vanished, his mysterious end became an integral part of the story of his life. Now, hundreds of pieces of a wrecked Lockheed Lightning, found on the Mediterranean seabed off the coast of Provence, have been positively identified as the airplane he was flying that night on a wartime spy mission. French authorities confirmed the find yesterday, based on a serial number found on a piece of the tail. Saint-Exupery is beloved in France as the author of “The Little Prince.” No body was found, and so far the wreck has not revealed any cause for the crash. “This was our holy grail,” Philippe Castellano, president of an association of aviation buffs who helped authorities identify the debris, told the Associated Press. “We never even imagined this.” Castellano said some Saint-Exupery fans resisted the effort to identify the wreck, preferring to keep the mystery alive. “In the end, I think everyone is satisfied,” he said. “We didn’t find a body, so the myth surrounding his disappearance will live on.” Saint-Exupery also wrote poetic novels based on his flying adventures, such as “Wind, Sand, and Stars” and “Night Flight.” A new opera based on “The Little Prince” opened in Houston, Texas, last year.

The author contends that myth is a distinct language system, and that its explanation is properly a philosophic one.
