Among twentieth century authors, P. L. Travers was by far the most productive and famous to hail from the British colony of Australia. After a brief and modestly successful acting career, she moved to London and pursued her own brand of journalism. She was a well-regarded drama critic and travel author, and she became friends with many influential writers and thinkers on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Eventually, she found her greatest voice in the form of Mary Poppins, the mysterious and powerful Edwardian nanny. Thirty years after the first Poppins adventure is published, Walt Disney produced a live-action movie version, which has ingrained itself forever in the popular imagination. This biography traces Travers from her youth, her early career in acting and writing, the making of Mary Poppins, and more. LifeCaps is an imprint of BookCaps™ Study Guides. With each book, a lesser known or sometimes forgotten life is recapped.

British writers of the 20th century have used humor in various ways in their works. This book surveys humor in British literature from Sir Arthur Wing Pinero (1855-1934) through Douglas (Noel) Adams (1952-). The volume is divided into ten chapters, with the first chapter covering authors born between 1855 and 1869, and with later chapters each covering authors born during a particular decade. Each chapter discusses the humor, satire, parody, irony, comedy, and wit of individual authors and gives extensive bibliographical information about other critics who have done the same. The book is arranged chronologically according to the birth year of the author being discussed. Through this chronological arrangement, the reader may trace the evolution of British literary humor over time. An index allows the reader to locate individual authors alphabetically.

In its program of lectures, the Library of Congress has introduced a succession of distinguished contributors to children's literature. First presented in 1963, many of the lectures included herein were given in observance of National Children's Book Week, and the authors have much to say about the genesis of their own writing for children. They speak convincingly about the influences and impulses that account for the qualities that define their books, and about creative writing and children's literature in general. All the authors share a conviction about the worth and complexity of children's literature, their respect for the children in their audience, and their delight in feeding children's power of imagination.
