Sparked by the invasion of Earth, regular citizens take up arms against a technically superior foe In the year 2075, Earth's Central Government provokes an assault on the home world led by The Alliance, a group of disgruntled second-generation earthlings who left the planet years ago only to return now with a sense of vengeance. Due to Earth's close proximity to the only known slipstream hub, many factions within the Alliance vow to take over the planet and seize all of its assets. Alexander Popuff, a prominent member of The Alliance, will stop at nothing to infiltrate and destroy Earth's Central Government, gaining a crucial piece of galactic real-estate. It's up to Earth's last line of defense, The Ahmardian Corporation to protect humanity from the threat of annihilation, which becomes imminent when The Alliance commandeers a powerful intergalactic starship known as The Alpha Centauri. Captain Adam of The Ahmardian Corporation knows that it is only a matter of time before Popuff figures out how to utilize the ship's destructive weaponry, which could ice a planet in seconds.

A life of Matilda--empress, skilled military leader, and one of the greatest figures of the English Middle Ages Matilda was a daughter, wife, and mother. But she was also empress, heir to the English crown--the first woman ever to hold the position--and an able military general. This new biography explores Matilda's achievements as military and political leader, and sets her life and career in full context. Catherine Hanley provides fresh insight into Matilda's campaign to claim the title of queen, her approach to allied kingdoms and rival rulers, and her role in the succession crisis. Hanley highlights how Matilda fought for the throne, and argues that although she never sat on it herself her reward was to see her son become king. Extraordinarily, her line has continued through every single monarch of England or Britain from that time to the present day.

Matilda, wife of William the Conqueror, was the first woman to be crowned Queen of England and formally recognised as such by her subjects. Beyond this, however, little is known of her. No contemporary images of her remain, and the chroniclers of her age left us only the faintest clues as to her life. Who was this spectral queen? In this first major biography, Tracy Borman sifts through the shards of evidence to uncover an extraordinary story. Matilda was loving and pious, possessed strength, ambition and intelligence, and was fiercely independent. All of these attributes gave her unparalleled influence over William. But although Matilda would provide an inspiring template for future indomitable queens, it led to treachery, revolt and the fracturing of a dynasty. Matilda: Wife of the Conqueror, First Queen of England takes us from the courts of Flanders to the opulence of royal life in England. Alive with intrigue, rumour and betrayal, it illuminates for the first time the life of an exceptional, brave and complex queen pivotal to the history of England.

Into the fascinating, pungent setting of Blood and Bone Alley, home of leech, barber-surgeon, and apothecary, comes Matilda, raised by a priest to disdain worldly affairs and focus on spiritual matters. To Matilda's dismay, her work will not involve Latin or writing, but practical tasks: lighting the fire, going to market, mixing plasters and poultices, and helping Peg treat patients. She is appalled by the worldliness of her new surroundings, and the sharp-tongued saints she turns to for advice are no help at all. Filled with the witty dialogue and richly authentic detail that Karen Cushman’s work is known for, Matilda Bone is a compelling comic novel about a girl who learns to see herself and others clearly, to laugh, and to live contentedly in this world. Author’s note.

Faced with the tragic deaths of both her husband and baby, Jenny is at her wit's end, with nowhere to turn. She soon learns that her husband has left for her, of all things, a sheep-station known as Churinga, in the Australian Outback. Although she thinks his final gift to her a strange one, Jenny thinks she might find solace in a trip out to Churinga. After all, what better way to feel close to her husband now than to visit a place he loved? But, like the grief she has tried to leave behind, the Outback she encounters is barren and the weather, hostile; however, Jenny is not one to turn around. Once there she hears of Churinga's last keeper, Matilda, whose identity becomes less and less clear to Jenny: the neighbors hold a grudging respect for Matilda's way with the land but are reluctant to speak of her to Jenny. And as Jenny spends more and more time on the farm, her predecessor's lingering presence looms ever larger. Then she discovers some old diaries and is bewitched by a tale more shocking than her wildest dreams could foretell. And the deeper she delves into Matilda's past, the more Jenny wonders whether inheriting Churinga has been a blessing or a curse, in Matilda's Last Waltz by Tamara McKinley.

A stunning novel about a small girl's experiences in an orphanage run by nuns. Funny and heart-breaking in equal measures it is a story for readers who were moved by the true life stories Kathy's Story and Suffer the LIttle Children, and the film, The Magdalene Sisters. When five-year-old Matilda arrives in her grandmother's house she's not sure what to expect. She never had a grandmother before. Or a grandfather. Or uncles. Her mother ran away so her father has brought Matilda and her sisters and brothers from Australia to live with his family in Ireland. At first it's lovely in her grandmother's, but it's not long before everything goes wrong and Matilda and the others are on the move again. It seems that her heart's desires - her mother, a home and a hug - are just too much to expect, and Matilda learns to make the best of things. Despite her father's increasing craziness, and despite the half-understood secrets that haunt her, Matilda finds trust and affection in the most unexpected places. By the time she is sixteen Matilda realizes that the only way to get a life, is to claim it, and that means taking on her over-powering father - not just for herself, but for her whole family. About Matilda is warm and funny, heart-rending and startling, dignified and redemptive, a vivid novel about growing up in terrible circumstances told from the heart of a child. 'A new literary heroine ... a wonderfully drawn character, endearing and shocking in equal measure' Irish Independent 'Covers painful ground, but it is a gentle book ... Matilda lingers in the memory' Irish Examiner 'An enchanting yet perturbing tale' Sunday Independent 'Told through Matilda's endearingly innocent and canny eyes ... kind and unflinching' Irish Times 'Utterly convincing ... the dark atmosphere is relieved only by Matilda's open-hearted spirit' Ireland on Sunday

The Gospels ofMatilda, Countess ofTuscany, is a manuscript written and illuminated in Northern Italy toward the end ofthe eleventh century. A credible fourteenth century document states that it was presented by the Countess to the Benedictine monastery of Polirone, near Mantua. In the manuscript's pictorial cycle, the Cleansing of the Temple and the scenes related to it are iconographically extra ordinary. An understanding of them must begin with a study of their ideological sources, closely related historicfigures, Medieval writers who employed the figure ofthe Cleansing ofthe Temple, and the political-social movement ofthe Patarines. Then the Matilda Gospels' illuminations will stand revealed as the key artistic expression of the Gregorian Reform and as a prime document of some of the most important events and ideas ofthe Middle Ages. II. ART AND THE REFORM OF THE ELEVENTH CENTURY Church reform in the eleventh century was a heroic engage ment. Norman Cantor calls it one of the four great «world revolutions» of Western history.! The authority of the papacy, theindependenceofthechurch, andtheveryleadershipofMedie val society were its mortally contested issues critical both to history and to political theory.2 Gregory VII and Matilda of Tuscany were but two of the vivid personalities among its partisans. But in the history ofart the struggle has been nearly invisible.

Shane and Tim Spall are on the second leg of a very big adventure, taking their Dutch barge The Princess Matilda around the coast of Britain. From Matilda’s winter berth in Cardiff, Shane and Tim follow the Welsh coast, before ambitiously deciding to visit the Isle of Man and Northern Ireland. Along the way they cross Cardigan Bay in the company of a pod of dolphins, meet the king and queen of Piel Island, get lost in shipping lanes near Liverpool, successfully cross the notorious Irish Sea (twice!), accidentally sail through an army firing range, and experience the matchless beauty of Scotland’s Caledonian canal. Emerging into the North Sea at Inverness, they set a course down the east coast for London, back where their journey began. Tim and Shane aren’t the amateur sailors they once were, but things still don’t always go to plan. It’s not easy navigating our dangerous coastal waters, and crashing waves and strong tides can be terrifying. But it’s exhilarating too, and the realisation of a dream they have had for a very long time. It’s a slow journey, but a satisfying one, visiting fishing villages and ports, and exploring Britain’s windswept coast. Along the way they meet brave lifeboat crews, lockkeepers, fishermen and a whole host of people who make their living or their leisure on the water. The Princess Matilda Comes Home is a funny and warm hearted story about sharing a great adventure with someone you love.
