'This book should be required reading for anyone thinking of having a baby, or even anyone who knows someone who is thinking of having a baby' Scotland on Sunday 'Fascinating and honest' Mumsnet 'Like talking to a friend' Observer Winner of the Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry There were many things that Hollie McNish didn't know before she was pregnant. How her family and friends would react; that Mr Whippy would be off the menu; how quickly ice can melt on a stomach. These were on top of the many other things she didn't know about babies: how to stand while holding one; how to do a poetry gig with your baby as a member of the audience; how drum'n'bass can make a great lullaby. And that's before you even start on toddlers. But Hollie learned. And she's still learning, slowly. Nobody Told Me is a collection of poems and stories; Hollie's thoughts on raising a child in modern Britain, of trying to become a parent in modern Britain, of sex, commercialism, feeding, gender and of finding secret places to scream once in a while.

The book is a short inspirational tale of the adventures and experiences of a polio survivor from the early 1950's. The bok is full of amusing anecdotes exploring the first 50 years of his eventful, and certainly not boring life. This is living life to the full in spite of a disability 'Come Smile With Me' is a short autobiography written by a Polio survivor. Peter was unfortunate to be one of the millions world wide who became infected by Polio in the early 1950's. Peter was initially totally paralyzed by the illness and in spite of his doctors reporting that he would never walk again, and probably not sit up, has gone on to live a very full life. Peter is partially disabled but this has not stopped him from participating in a wide range of activities. The chapters describe the many stages that his life has gone through up to the present day. 'Come Smile With Me' is an invitation to follow Peter's life from the traumas of the Polio virus, and how this subsequently resulted in further deterioration later in life, but also enjoy many of the numerous amusing anecdotes. The book is written in a very easy style and is both thought provoking and in many passages highly amusing. whether disabled or not, and successfully demonstrates the positive side to almost every event that we may be forced to go through. A very good read for someone who would like a lift, or is currently going through a difficult time in his or her life.

It is heartfelt and uplifting, incredibly moving and full of laugh out loud humour. "I don't believe any parent, if they had the choice, would choose a physical or mental handicap for their child. No parent wants their child to suffer. But despite my son's limitations, he inspires me every day. He is innocence personified and sees the world as the truly wonderful and magical place that it is. He reminds me how to have fun, to find humour in everything and show kindness to everyone."

Zach and his sister Annis have been uprooted by their parents from their comfortable home to a remote and half-built barn in France. Zach is being removed from his 'bad-influence' friends, their parents are trying to salvage their marriage and still remain on speaking terms whilst the bitterness of their father's affair bubbles underneath the surface. And Annis - Annis just keeps going, keeping her head down, trying to keep it together. So far so normal. And then Zach, uncommunicative and contrary as ever these days, defies everything their parents have said and makes his way to the unsafe ruined building at the edge of their new garden, and leans up against the wall. The wall bulges, totters - and suddenly collapses on top of him. Annis, horrified, sees him crumpled on the ground. Desperate, she races towards him, not daring to think anything at all. She sees him, on the ground, broken, silent, not there any more. And then, unbelievably, he moves. Zach moves. Zach, in an extraordinary and instinctive decision, has broken his bond with his own soul, the essence of himself. By doing so he has cheated death. By doing so he has also cheated life. He is unable to touch any human person again. And the essence of himself, his 'other', his soul, is chasing him, determined to rejoin what should rightfully be together. Zach is on the run, from himself, whom he can never escape, from death, but also from the life that he can never enjoy again. Perhaps only a sister can help him now.

“Here is a worthy successor to Ted Hughes’Poetry in the Making, the book that enabled me to gain the confidence to begin to find my own voice as a story teller.Children Writing Storiesconfirms that we all have a story to tell if we are enabled to develop enough self-belief. So much of our natural creativity is smothered during our school years. Teachers and children feel hemmed in by the strictures of a curriculum which simply does not allow room for creativity to breathe. Unlock the chains, let the light in, and this is the kind of writing that will flow, this is the kind of intellectual and emotional growing that can transform young lives.†Michael Morpurgo, Children’s Laureate 2003-2005 “What a splendid book! Michael Armstrong paysattention - thirty years of it - to the stories thatchildren write. We get two for one: the children’sown delightful and intriguing work - I want torush off and write some Wally (age 5) stories ofmy own - and Michael Armstrong’s intenseinterpretations. †Allan Ahlberg "This is real learning at its best, teaching byexample, through painstaking scrutiny of the artof young writers. Absorbing, moving, enlightening, inspiring." Morag Styles, University of Cambridge InChildren Writing Stories, Michael Armstrong reveals the creative force of children's narrative imagination and shows how this develops through childhood. He provides a new and powerful understanding of the significance of narrative for children’s intellectual growth and for learning and teaching. The book explores a series of real stories written by children between the ages of five and fifteen, and traces the growth of literary consciousness from the dawn of written narrative in the kindergarten, through the early years of schooling and on into adolescence. Each chapter opens with a story or stories, which the author then goes on to examine in detail, so that the book may be seen as both a select anthology of children’s stories and as a critical account of children’s narrative practice. This original and provocative book will appeal to teachers, parents, students of education and readers with an interest in literacy, children's writing or narrative theory.
