A Simple Cash Book for small businesses This cashbook is a very simple Income and Expense ledger which will be useful for small home - based businesses. Inside you will find columns for: Date Description Income Expense Balance The book size: 6 inches wide by 9 inches tall, small and compact. It has 120 pages. Overview You can record all your business income and expenses in two separate columns and then keep a running balance of your total cash balance. If you pay all your income into your bank (checking) account and then make all payments out of your bank (checking) account, then this cash book will balance back to your bank (checking) statements. How to use the book At the top of the page, you are encouraged to write an Opening Balance or Balance carried forward. This could be your opening bank (checking) balance shown in your bank (checking) statement. Enter your transactions as you progress through the month, moving onto the next page if you run out of space. When you get to the end of the month, just check that the balance in your cash book is the same as the balance in your bank (checking) account. If it isn't, it means that you have missed a transaction in your cash book. You'll need to tick off each item from your cash book against your bank (checking) statement in order to find this. Start a new page for each new month. Note: This is a very simple cash book with only one column for income and one column for expenses. It does not allow you to analyse your spending into different categories. You would need a cashbook with more columns to do that. About the Author This simple cash book has been created by Jane E Kelly who is the author of several books, including Bookkeeping for Dummies, Sage 50 Accounts for Dummies and more recently has compiled and co-authored Bookkeeping & Accounting All In One for Dummies (all Wiley Publications). Jane realised that there is a need for micro businesses or those just starting out, to document their business transactions in a simple way. This book is great for those who hate spreadsheets but love journals!
