St George's Day has become a topic of debate as more and more organizations promote celebrations on 23 April and more people wave the flag of St George to proclaim their allegiance and identity. But who was St George? How did this Near Eastern martyr become England's patron saint and an icon of English culture? And what is his relevance for today's secular, multicultural England? New research reveals that from the third century St George was revered as a healer, protector of women and the poor and patron of agriculture and metal-working more than a military dragon-slayer. Discover the origin of the cross of St George and the roles of Richard I, Edward III and Henry VIII in making St George the patron saint of England. With a foreword by Professor Emeritus Dan Brown, this richly-illustrated celebration of English culture shows how St George can be reinterpreted for our times while remaining true to our English heritage. St George can be enlisted in the cause of ecology, the campaign against FGM, and the fight to end modern slavery and resettle refugees. English yet international, revered both by Christians and Muslims, St George is a multicultural figure who symbolizes universal values.

The war is real. From the creation, good men and women of all nations have sought diligently for the God of heaven, that they might align themselves with Him against evil in all its forms. George is such a man. After a decade in the Roman army, bringing the blessings of peace and liberty to many people, he joins the Emperor's personal guard. Secure in his faith yet humbled by the vast responsibilities entrusted to him, George is shocked when the specter of Christian persecution arises in the imperial council. How will he answer the demand that he renounce his faith in God and worship the Roman gods? What price will his choice require of him? How will his example influence others for good or evil? Where is God's justice and mercy in all this confusion? Join with George on his journey of faith and self-discovery as he prepares himself to be faithful to God and to the principles of truth and righteousness wherever they are found and whatever the sacrifice that is required.Historically, George was born around 275 AD, most likely in Lydda, Palestine. He died on Good Friday, April 23, 303 AD. He was executed at the inception of the final and most severe state-sanctioned Christian persecution in Roman history. During the 28 years of his life, George set an example so amazing that his goodness and memory have endured. He was a military officer who was loved by the people he conquered. The records of his military successes and powerful witness of faith have largely been destroyed, but what remains recounts a life that inspired many to faith in Christ. He is somewhat of an exception among great men and saints in that he is known and respected by Christians, Jews and Muslims throughout the Middle East, from Africa to Asia, and in Europe. He bent his will fully to their common deity, the God of Abraham, the one true and living God, in defiance of the Roman Emperor. His fame and popularity grew steadily, even after he was executed for his faith. George has been revered for his military conquests, his liberation of the oppressed, and his uncompromising fidelity to Almighty God. Some 800 years after his death, many Christians and non-Christians alike still honored him as a saint who brought peace, prosperity, and religious tolerance to their people. His fame was so enduring that the Crusaders of the late 11th and early 12th centuries met in the Holy Land and collectively adopted the banner and colors of St. George, a red cross on a white field. Upon their return from the crusades, these soldiers romanticized the legend of St. George with a symbolic account of his mythical battle with a dragon for the life of a princess and access to the water of life, which had no prior historical reference. He is often depicted in art on a horse with a spear, above a dragon. He is the Patron Saint of the following nations: Aragon, Bulgaria, Catalonia, Egypt, England, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, India, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Lithuania, Malta, Palestine, Portugal, Serbia, Syria, Russia and Ukraine, among others. The historical evidence regarding the details of St. George's life is somewhat limited. Yet it is clear that he was a true saint, and the type of person who lived by every word of God. God intends for all His children to live by His word, studying and pondering how each passage, principle, and truth might help us to understand our own experiences in life. Each principle of righteousness and holiness is not so much a mystery as it is a puzzle. We are invited to work at them and solve them as we each gather experiences from day to day. It has been said the gospel is so simple that a child could not err therein, and yet it is so profound that it can never be fully comprehended in mortality. The mysteries of God are not secret, but they are sacred. They are available to all who will honor them.

An epic of America in the 1960s and 1970s, SAINT GEORGE AND THE DRAGON is the thrilling story of a highly dangerous and illegal domestic CIA operation in the United States. In post-Watergate June 1976, veteran CIA counterinsurgency officer George Oldman Davies is assigned to hunt down and liquidate Justin Wertham, a charismatic student radical leader of the late Sixties turned terrorist.Set against the disillusionment and cynicism of the mid-1970s in the aftermath of the idealistic hopes of the Sixties, SAINT GEORGE AND THE DRAGON is both an exciting action-adventure story and a compelling political thriller about the death of the American Empire. It's told by its protagonist George Oldman Davies--a brilliant, tormented CIA man, terrifying, violent, all too human, and possibly evil, who represents the contradictions inherent in America. While undertaking an audacious Ché Guevara-style manhunt in the wilderness of Pennsylvania, George comes to realize that this test case for a proposed government program of domestic political assassination is certain to doom America just as it did ancient Rome. The intertwined fates of the secret policeman and the revolutionary inevitably collide--with devastating results for both. Wolcott Wheeler is a writer who lives in New York City. Shortly after graduating from Princeton University, he became a screenwriter for Columbia Pictures in Hollywood and later lived in Japan. He is also a historian, journalist, and literary and political essayist who has published academically. A published haiku poet, he is a comic book creator as well. To research SAINT GEORGE AND THE DRAGON, he conducted extensive interviews with major CIA officials such as Ray Cline, the former Director of Intelligence under JFK and LBJ; Robert Komer, ex-ambassador to South Vietnam and architect of the notorious Operation Phoenix; Green Berets; and other members of the U.S. intelligence community.
