This beautiful and definitive guide brings together the world's lead leading expert on North American trout and salmon, Robert Behnke, and the foremost illustrator in the field, Joseph Tomelleri. North America is graced with the greatest diversity of trout and salmon on earth. From tiny brook trout in mountain streams of the Northeast, to cutthroat trout in the rivers of the Rockies, to Chinook salmon of the Pacific, the continent is home to more than 70 types of trout and salmon. How this came to be, how they are related, and what makes them unique -- and so breathtaking -- is the story of Trout and Salmon of North America. The more than 100 illustrations of trout and salmon by Joseph Tomelleri showcased here exhibit a genius for detail, coloration, and proportion. Each portrait is made from field notes, streamside observations, photographs, and specimens collected by the artist. The result is a set of the most accurate and stunning illustrations of fish ever created. Robert Behnke has distilled 50 years of his research and writing about trout and salmon in completing this book. No one understands better than Behnke the diversity and conservation issues concerning these fishes or communicates so lucidly the biological wonders and complexities of their particular beauty. Also included are more than 40 richly detailed maps that clearly show the ranges of populations of trout and salmon throughout North America. An irresistible delight for anyone who appreciates natural history, Trout and Salmon of North America is a master guide to the natural elegance of our native fishes.

This important book contains a great wealth of practical information on trout and salmon, species of fish that are of huge scientific and commercial interest. The introductory chapters of Trout and Salmon cover the biology and environmental variables of importance when considering these species. Further chapters encompass current information on the ecology of salmon and trout, with particular emphasis on the definition and quantification, where possible, of their environmental requirements and limitations. Comprehensive coverage of the impacts of human activities on trout and salmon is included, together with important aspects of relevance when considering issues of species conservation and habitat restoration. The book concentrates on the two species of the genus Salmo with many references and comparisons with the genus Oncorhynchus. Conclusions drawn within the book apply to both genera and as such the book will have relevance for both Europe and North America as well as other areas where these genera occur. Trevor Crisp has written a book that will be of great interest and use to fish biologists and fisheries scientists, to aquatic biologists, conservationists, ecologists and environmental scientists. The book will be particularly valuable for those working in government environment agencies and fish and wildlife departments and to all those involved in the management of these important species, their fisheries and habitats.

Excerpt from The Age and Growth of Salmon and Trout in Norway: As Shown by Their Scales This argument carried with it so much weight that it became in my opinion a matter of the utmost importance to discover a suitable method of acquiring the fullest possible information on the questions of the salmon's age, and rate of growth, and as to its life history generally. My previous investigations had also frequently brought me into contact with many problems relating to the marked tendency to variation shown by all the varieties and species of the Salmonidae, and especially to the remarkable disposition to variation possessed by all the numerous forms of trout. It has long been recognised that both salmon and trout may vary exceedingly in different localities, a difference which is often strikingly apparent in the size of the fish. For example, in the case of salmon it was well known, and it has also been proved by actual measurements, that along certain parts of the coast they were larger than at others, and, further, it was known that trout in certain lakes and streams attained considerable dimensions; whereas in other waters, perhaps in the immediate vicinity, they barely succeeded in passing the limit at which they became sufficiently large for eating.
