In the Middle Ages, writing conveyed far more than information. In contradistinction to the modern separation of image and text and, by implication, form and content, which was reified with the invention of printing, illuminated manuscripts made images out of words. In consonance with Christian doctrine, which declared that the Word had become flesh, letters painted on parchment assumed bodily presence to create effects of power and persuasion. Painted letters elicited modes of performance, oral recitation and ritual action. Far from calligraphic ornament or a medium with prescribed boundaries, medieval lettering reveals itself as a flexible instrument in which various categories of human experience and expression -- the audible, the visible, the symbolic and the figurative -- come together. Among the topics touched on by this book are display scripts, monograms, nomina sacra and carmina figurata, epigraphic inscriptions, chrysography and color, speech scrolls, relationships among author, scribe and artist as expressed through scripts, the anthropomorphic dimensions of abstract lettering, and the impact of iconic scripts on the reader.

SCRIPT is an executive control program designed and written at AFCRL to allow highly interactive on-line control of a medium-size digital computer used for research applications. Subroutines written by the user in conventional assembly or compiler languages are stored in a drum memory and called into core for execution by commands written on- or off-line in SCRIPT. Thus, arbitrarily complex functions can be controlled by a single word in SCRIPT. Housekeeping capabilities include construction of loops and conditional statements, text handling ability, index registers, and macro definitions.

On Images Visual Culture Memory and the Play Without a Script

Matthias Smalbrugge compares modern images to plays without a script: while they appear to refer to a deeper identity or reality, it is ultimately the image itself that truly matters. He argues that our modern society of images is the product of a destructive tendency in the Christian notion of the image in general, and Augustine of Hippo's in particular. This insight enables him to propose a new 'script'. As we live in an increasingly visual culture, we are constantly confronted with images that seem to exist without a deeper identity or reality – but did this referential character truly get lost over time? Smalbrugge first explores the roots of the modern image by analysing imagery, what it represents, and its moral state within the framework of philosophy and pelagianism. Smalbrugge then discusses the work of Plato and Plotinus, homing in on their notion of being human. This brings him to Augustine's Confessions and De Trinitate, where he finds valuable insights into images and memory. He explores the theologian's relationship with Petrach, nominalism, and Foucault. Smalbrugge ultimately answers two questions: what happened to the referential character of the image, and can it be recovered?

"Making a good script great is not just a matter of having a good idea. Nor is it a matter of just putting that good idea down on paper. In scriptwriting, it's not just the writing but also the rewriting that counts. [This book] focuses on the rewriting process and offers specific methods to help you craft tighter, stronger, and more workable scripts. While retaining all the valuable insights that have made the first edition one of the all-time most popular screenwriting books, this expanded, second edition adds new chapters that take you through the complete screenwriting process, from the first draft through the shooting draft. If you're writing your first script, this book will help develop your skills for telling a compelling and dramatic story. If you're a veteran screenwriter, this book will articulate the skills you know intuitively. And if you're currently stuck on a rewrite, this book will help you analyze and solve the problems and get your script back on track."--Back cover.
