"Finally available to modern scholars, this book is the first critical edition of these two plays by Edward Moore. The success of the initial run of Moore's sentimental comedy The Foundling (1748) was due in part to its cast, which included Susannah Maria Cibber and David Garrick, and the play continued to enjoy moderate success on the London stage. It remained popular among critics throughout the eighteenth century and was reprinted and performed regularly in the nineteenth. In the twentieth century, as the most important and the best sentimental comedy of the mid-eighteenth century, it has been generally accepted by literary historians as the bridge between the comedies of Colley Cibber and Richard Steele in the first part of the century and those of Hugh Kelly and Richard Cumberland in the last. The initial run of Moore's domestic tragedy The Gamester(1753), with Garrick in the title role, was also largely successful. From its first revival in 1771 to its last in 1871, the play was performed by Britain's finest actors and actresses - and performed more frequently on the London stage than any other Restoration or eighteenth-century tragedy." "Anthony Amberg's introduction discusses the sources and composition, production, publication and reception, and final revision of both plays. The text of The Foundling is based on Moore's holograph manuscript, that of The Gamester on the first edition. In both the author's spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and italicization have been retained, and both have been provided with full textual and explanatory notes."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Through compelling black-and-white photography and informative, engaging text, this book chronicles the work of one of the nations most remarkable social service institutionsthe New York Foundling Hospital. As this book eloquently demonstrates, the Foundling is an institution that from its very inception was committed to helping societys most vulnerable: children. The story of the Foundling begins in the bustling New York City of the mid-nineteenth century, where half a million people, mostly immigrant and poor, struggled to turn their dreams of a better life into reality. They faced unemployment, daily want, and early death. Some 30,000 children roamed the streets of the city and accounted for most of the felony crimes. Thousands more never lived long enough to experience such a dreadful existencethey died of neglect, disease, malnourishment, or abandonment. Founded in 1869 by Sr. Mary Irene Fitzgibbon and the Sisters of Charity, the work of the Foundling today remains just as challenging and urgent as it did. The agency now serves some 13,000 children and their families, through diverse and innovative programs in New York City, surrounding counties, and Puerto Rico. The story of the New York Foundling Hospital is one that continues to challenge and inspire. The Foundling is a book for all who wish to learn more about this extraordinary institution.

First published in 1951, this is the simple, heart-warming story of a baby left by its mother in a great cathedral in New York, and of the man who found it. Opening immediately after World War I, the story centers on Paul Taggart, a returned soldier, who had lost an arm in the war and who also carried on his face a disfiguring scar. It was at Christmas time that Paul entered the cathedral and there, in the crib, discovered Peter, the small helpless foundling who was to mean so much to him in the future... A compassionate, moving story.
