Compiled by Charles Dickens, and counting Elizabeth Gaskell and WilkieCollins among its contributors, The Haunted House is an ingenious tale of the supernatural with touches of pure Dickensian comedy. When the narrator espies a deserted house from his railway carriage, he cannot resist the challenge of taking up residence in a place no one else will inhabit. Local legend has terrified the nearby villagers, and they, in turn, convince his servants to abandon ship. Undaunted, he and his sister invite a group of friends to join them. Having shared out the household tasks, the guests are then commissioned to rout out the supernatural from their respective rooms. On Twelfth Night they meet to share their ghostly tales. The result is a feast of lively and bizarre storytelling, uniting the finest in Victorian literary talent. "As a document of self-revelation, The Haunted House is of the utmost significance for anyone interested in exploring thegenius of Charles Dickens.

You know the page at the beginning of a book where they have to say "This is a work of fiction"? Well, I can't say that. This is the true story of the haunted house I grew up in. I may have changed the names of people and places to protect the privacy of my family and the other folks involved, but this is not just another one of those made-up spooky stories about a creepy old house. This is the story of a house that most people didn't think was haunted, of a kid who most people thought was just using his big imagination, and of a family that had no idea what all they were getting into when they bought it. This is the story of a real house where real people lived and died. And though I've moved away and grown up, there are still real people who live there...and who...don't live...there. And the main reason I am writing this is because the family who lives in it right now...might be yours.

It is one of the best spooky stories, definitely spine-chilling. Mysterious and vivacious action in the story mesmerizes the reader. The horrifying effect is created as the arcane setting of fires, shaking of the house, loud and incessant noises, distinct knocking as sledge-hammers on the walls and the furniture moves in day-light without any visible cause. Interesting and fear-provoking!

A popular phenomenon since antiquity, the image of the haunted house is one that has translated elegantly into the modern medium of film. The haunted house transcends genre, appearing in mysteries, gothic romances, comedies and horror films. This book is the first comprehensive historical and critical study of themes surrounding haunted houses in film. Covering more than 100 films, it spans from the Mystery House thrillers of the silent era to the high-tech, big budget productions of the 21st Century. Included are the works of such acclaimed directors as D.W. Griffith, Robert Wise, Mario Bava, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Tim Burton and Guillermo Del Toro. The book also covers the real-life "haunted house" phenomenon and movies based on paranormal case files, including those featured in films like the Conjuring series.
