** "This memoir seems written directly from Hemp’s soul, as she beautifully shares her moving story of learning to love and trust again after loss."--Booklist ** Christine Hemp's debut work of nonfiction, Wild Ride Home, is a brilliant memoir, looping themes of finding love and losing love, of going away and coming home, of the wretched course of Alzheimer's, of cancer, of lost pregnancies, of fly fishing and horsemanship, of second chances, and, ultimately, of the triumph of love and family--all told within the framework of the training of a little white horse named Buddy. Wild Ride Home invites the reader into the close Hemp family, which believes beauty and humor outshine the most devastating circumstances. Such optimism is challenged when the author suffers a series of blows: a dangerous fiancé, her mother’s dementia, unexpected death and illness. Buddy, a feisty, unforgettable little Arabian horse with his own history to overcome, offers her a chance to look back on her own life and learn to trust again, not only others, but more importantly, herself. Hemp skillfully guides us through a memoir that is, despite devastating loss, above all, an ode to joy.

Readers captivated by this book will be happy that Bill Ferris found Ray Lum and that he thought to turn on a tape recorder. Lum (1891–1977) was a mule skinner, a livestock trader, an auctioneer, and an American original. This delightful book, first published in 1992 as You Live and Learn. Then You Die and Forget It All, preserves Lum’s colorful folk dialect and captures the essence of this one-of-a-kind figure who seems to have stepped full-blooded from the pages of Mark Twain. This riveting tale-spinner was tall, heavy-set, and full of body rhythm as he talked. In his special world, he was famous for trading, for tale-telling, and for common-sense lessons that had made him a savvy bargainer and a shrewd businessman. His home and his auction barn were in Vicksburg, Mississippi, where mules were his main interest, but in trading he fanned out over twenty states and even into Mexico. A west Texas newspaper reported his fame this way, “He is known all over cow country for his honest, fair dealing and gentlemanly attitude. . . .A letter addressed to him anywhere in Texas probably would be delivered.” Over several years, Ferris recorded Lum’s many long conversations that detail livestock auctioneering, cheery memories of rustic Deep South culture, and a philosophy of life that is grounded in good horse sense. Even among the most spellbinding talkers, Lum is a standout both for what he has to say and for the way he says it. Ferris’s lucky, protracted encounters with him turn out to be the best of good fortune for everybody.

In The White Horse Talisman, Chantel, Adam, Holly and Owen must help Equus, the great white horse, find his mate and foal and regain his magical talisman. But as the horse rises, so does the dragon. The age-old battle between good and evil threatens the bond between Chantel and Adam and endangers the quest. This is fantasy as its best, a story that raises hairs on the back of the neck and sends satisfying chills up and down the spine, a story that, while clearly drawn from the rich world of make believe, feels truer than true.

The stories of magic and myth gathered by the Brothers Grimm have become part of the way children—and adults—learn about the vagaries of the real world. Cinderella, Rapunzel, Snow-White, Hänsel and Gretel, Little Red-Cap (Little Red Riding Hood), and Briar-Rose (Sleeping Beauty) are only a few of the more than two hundred enchanting characters included in this volume. The tales are presented just as Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm originally set them down: bold, primal, just frightening enough, and endlessly engaging. The White Horse Pike may not be America’s most famous road, but it is one of the most storied. Originally a migratory footpath of the Leni-Lenape, this timeless 60-mile route from the Delaware to the Atlantic has been followed by everyone from Walt Whitman to the Jersey Devil. It has served as a stagecoach highway, a toll road, and a pattern for railroads. The White Horse Pike depicts the heyday of this still popular city-to-shore road, the most direct route from Camden to Atlantic City.

The Rider of the White Horse is a classic German novella, in which the individual wrestles with the mass, the man with the most elementary forces of nature. The scene of the novella is characterized with vividness in its setting of marsh and sea, it glorifies love, and at the same time it touches themes which deeply occupied Storm, such as the problem of heredity or the relation between father and son. Happiness is won, but it ends in tragedy. It is a man of sober intellect who tells the whole story - and yet, like human life itself, it stands out against a mystic background. Remembrance of long ago has clarified everything. It is Storm's last complete work.

This is the story of a year in the life of an eighteen-year-old wife and mother suddenly living in a war zone. She and her husband, a jet fighter pilot, were based at Itazuke Air Force base, Fukuoka, Japan, when in the night the North Koreans invaded South Korea; the pilots of the 5th Air Force were at war. The wives based at Itazuke remained on base, facing the tragedy of lost and wounded friends and the ever-present fear of what became known as the "Death Parade." Included are letters written home by a frightened, homsick little girl, determined nevertheless to stay with her husband, yet fearful for their new baby. These letters are poignant in their simplicity. Also included are songs the pilots sang after a day of combat, songs of death and dying. This true story is unlike any other tale of the Korean War. It records a side of war little seen and seldom remembered. Whether there daily in the war zone or sitting thousands of miles away, the pilot's wife just waits.

The Rider of the White Horse (1888) is a classic German novella, in which the individual wrestles with the mass, the man with the most elementary forces of nature. It is Theodor Storm's (1817-1888) last complete work. --- The scene of the novella is characterized with vividness and grandeur in its setting of marsh and sea. Like the stories of Storm's youth, it glorifies love, the love of two beings who are faithful to each other unto death, and at the same time it touches themes which deeply occupied Storm, such as the problem of heredity or the relation between father and son. The charm of youth, to which Storm was always most susceptible, invests the chief characters, and they have that chaste reserve that holds all internal life sacred. Happiness is won, but it ends in tragedy. It is a man of sober intellect who tells the whole story - and yet, like human life itself, it stands out against a mystic background. Remembrance of long ago has clarified everything; loving comprehension fills everything with deepest sympathy. --- It was granted to Storm to stand on a pinnacle of art at the end of his life, a pinnacle which he had to leave, but from which he did not need to descend. This is the first book in the series of "Charlie the Great White Horse" "Charlie the Great White Horse and the Story of the Magic Jingle Bells," is a children's/ adult Christmas novella that evokes: the adventure, fantasy and magical happy-endings, of a simpler time in America. This story is set in the early 1900's, in the mythical town of Centerville, Indiana. Louis Parks is a: ten year old red haired, freckle faced boy, who is a little small for his age, and found to be in constant trouble with his mom, because he never finishes his daily-chores; due to his endless daydreaming. Louis envisions himself the hero in his fantasies; but his real life is quite different. Louis has found a special friendship with Charlie-a very friendly, but somewhat strange barnyard-horse; of Louis' neighbor, Mr. Beamer. Charlie has his own secrets though. Although he appears to be: an old working cart-horse, soon to be replaced by the new "horseless-buggy" technology, he is in fact; the last of a very special breed of horse. He is an "Arion," from the "ancient times," who can achieve immortality by performing magical acts of daring and courage-when called upon. As the story unfolds in the months before Christmas, Charlie, Louis and Chug Martin are thrown into circumstances wrought: with danger, daring, and intrigue. They must: foil the plot of a trio of horse-thieves from Saint Louis, who arrive in Centerville-during the annual county fair-to steal Jupiter, the great racehorse, who has come to run in Centerville's famous "Gazette Stakes." Charlie, Louis and Chug perform: heroic deeds, ultimately acts of great courage, bravery and determination; in ridding the town of the three Missouri Rats- Black Jack Tilly, Cool Joe Biggs and Rags Martin. This wonderful Christmas fable is about: tried-and-true-values and good-morals that all children; should take to heart. This is a: coming-of-age story that should be relevant for children of all ages. The pre-quell to this book is: The Journey to Northumberland and the Rise of the Undertoads.
