Inspired by Spanish artists from the 15th century to the 21st, The Other Guernica invites us into worlds of violence and love, war and domesticity, in a collection that is both a coherent homage to the painting of Spain, and a daring exploration of what might emerge when word meets image. Read with or without the images that inspired them, Derek Sellen's poems are equally powerful.

The celebrated Spanish playwright Fernando Arrabal, who lived in Madrid under the oppression of the Franco regime, writes passionately of human atrocity and of hope. This collection of plays embodies Arrabal's "theatre of panic," named after the god Pan. The homme panique is a man who refuses to take risks, who avoids danger and therefore heroism, who avoids the irreparable act, but who, ironically, is caught up in a world of chance that forces him to make choices. The collection includes Guernica, an earthy verbal re-creation of Picasso's famous painting, in which an old Basque couple is caught in the air raids; And They Put Handcuffs on the Flowers, a violent protest against the Franco regime; the ingenious and poetic The Architect and the Emperor of Assyria; and Garden of Delights, which explores the lesbian tendencies of strong adolescent attachments and the sadomasochistic experience of adult love. Includes: 'Guernica' 'And They Put Handcuffs on the Flowers' 'The Architect and the Emperor of Assyria' 'Garden of Delights'

Of all the great paintings in the world, Picasso's Guernica has had a more direct impact on our consciousness than perhaps any other. In this absorbing and revealing book, Gijs van Hensbergen tells the story of this masterpiece. Starting with its origin in the destruction of the Basque town of Gernika in the Spanish Civil War, the painting is then used as a weapon in the propaganda battle against Fascism. Later it becomes the nucleus of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the detonator for the Big Bang of Abstract Expressionism in the late 1940s. This tale of passion and politics shows the transformation of this work of art into an icon of many meanings, up to its long contested but eventually triumphant return to Spain in 1981.

A brilliant, concise account of the painting often described as the most important work of art produced in the twentieth century, as part of the stunning Landmark Library series. Pablo Picasso had already accepted a commission in 1937 to create a work for the Spanish Republican Pavilion at the Paris World Fair when news arrived of the assault by the German Condor Legion on the undefended Basque town of Guernica, in which hundreds of civilians died. James Attlee offers an illuminating account of the genesis, creation and many-stranded afterlife of Picasso's Guernica. He explores the historical context from which it sprang; the artistic influences that informed its execution; the critical responses that it elicited; its journeyings across Europe and America in the late 1930s; its post-war adoption by new generations of anti-war protestors; and its eventual return to Spain following the death of Franco.

The writing of Carlos De Oliviera is usually considered neorealist, but this selection of poems also shows the influence of symbolism, surrealism, and cubism. These poems reflect on the nature of writing in the actual process of its production, which lends this work great density and acuity.

Professor Russell's innovative method of presentation allows the reader to be "present at the creation" of what may be the most significant work of art of this century. The book traces the principal iconographic themes of the mural: the Crucifixion and the bullfight, and the minotaur. Its structural elements are examined in depth, with clear visual documentation. Dr. Russell undertakes a fresh and comprehensive analysis of Picasso's "vision," including the implications of his methods and visual projection and distortion. The creative process and final richness of effect are illuminated by a tracking of the mural's evolution through the 45 Guernica studies and seven unfinished states. The sources for the mural are documented by extensive reference to Picasso's work as a whole and to examples from earlier historical periods, and a critical survey of the Guernica literature is provided. -- From publisher's description.
