The Satires of Horace (65–8 BC), written in the troubled decade ending with the establishment of Augustus’ regime, provide an amusing treatment of men’s perennial enslavement to money, power, glory and sex. Epistles I, addressed to the poet’s friends, deals with the problem of achieving contentment amid the complexities of urban life, while Epistles II and the Ars Poetica discuss Latin poetry – its history and social functions, and the craft required for its success. Both works have had a powerful influence on later Western literature, inspiring poets from Ben Jonson and Alexander Pope to W. H. Auden and Robert Frost. The Satires of Persius (AD 34–62) are highly idiosyncratic, containing a courageous attack on the poetry and morals of his wealthy contemporaries – even the ruling emperor, Nero.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1803 edition. Excerpt: ... NOTES. SATIRE I. Ver. l. O curas hominum! O quantum est in rebus inane!. The Author may be supposed to have commenced a satire upon the idle vanities of the world, when his friend interrupts him, by asking him, who would read so grave a piece of morality. Casaubon has had the dexterity to find out, that Persius meant to be facetious in this line. He hath omitted none of those things, says the commentator, qua satiricum cachinnumpossunt movere. But it seems, he not only sneered, but conveyed in these few words much recondite wisdom. Vides, continues Casaubon, quam apto, quam philosophico, quam -ttyvnM principio utatur Persius? Ver. 4. Ne mihi Polydamas, &c. By Polydamas et Troides, Persius is generally supposed to have meant Nero and his courtiers. But was not Polydamas an illustrious character? *Ot pnv dfA. Aulus Persius Flaccus (A.D. 34-62) wrote in racy conversational Latin six satires countering contemporary vice with Stoic morality; he died young. This is not easy poetry, with its sudden shifts of tone, switches of speaker and situation, vivid evocation of the everyday roman background, and confident handling of philosophical positions. But it is still a good read. This edition prints the Latin text faced with a brilliant verse translation by Guy Lee. The introduction and commentary provided by William Barr make it a suitable class text.
