Focuses on nurturing the emotional health of patients and families to ensure improved outcomes This innovative clinical practice resource for neonatal nurses embodies family-centered care strategies for optimal outcomes through every phase of the NICU experience. While rigorous programs provide the knowledge and skills to care for the physical needs of high-risk mothers and neonates, NICU practitioners often find themselves unprepared to support the emotional health of these patients and their families. Care Coordination in the NICU provides the education, inspiration, and resources to NICU health professionals so they can learn how to be emotionally supportive to their patient’s entire family unit. The book addresses a variety of challenging patient and family issues that occur in the NICU as they relate to care coordination throughout the process. Each chapter focuses on a particular area of the perinatal/neonatal family journey, and includes current medical research, clinical examples, and recommendations for best practice alongside case studies that depict families experiencing a perinatal challenge. Most valuable of all, each chapter also includes stories directly from the source, the families, who have experienced the fear, isolation, and uncertainly of an NICU experience, and have greatly benefited from the emotional support of caring practitioners. Key Features: Examines the gamut of challenging patient and family issues that occur in the NICU as they relate to care coordination throughout the process Helps practitioners to incorporate family-centered care into their daily practices Discusses effective listening and communication strategies for families in crisis Includes examples of practice improvement strategies to improve clinical outcome and reduce the risk of re-hospitalization Provides a Case-Based Learning section depicting real-world scenarios for discussion and problem-solving Includes links to abundant resources and educational material Contains chapters on palliative care and bereavement and supporting patients with special challenges.

The doctor takes a family! Tammy Prunty is an excellent neonatal-intensive-care nurse—and a single mom of five children! There's simply no time in her life for relationships. Besides, she's sworn off men for good! Her gorgeous colleague, neonatal specialist Laird Burchell, is definitely out of the question. He's a playboy, way out of her league and not the kind of man who'd even think about taking on five kids. But Laird's been bowled over by Tammy's warmth, her sense of humor and her gorgeous red hair. He might be daunted by the prospect of fatherhood, but there's so much about Tammy and her lively young family that makes him think she's a woman worth risking everything for….

F king Up the Buttons on a Babygrow

Have you ever faked sleep at 3 a.m. in a perverse game of 'baby monitor chicken' with your partner? Or wondered exactly how dire the consequences of an incorrect measurement of formula might be? Have you fought off the urge to strangle the feral child who smeared something unidenitfiable on the playground slide just before your toddler used it? Or fought off the urge to strangle your own while they repeatedly shout 'What's up f**kface?' to all and sundry during a trip to the supermarket? If you're a new parent, you've probably done at least one of the above. And if you have, it's OK, as Drew Magary expertly demonstrates in this hilarious book. Drew's commentary on the perils of modern-day fatherhood is so acutely observed, and so brilliantly told, that in a perfect world it would be advertised at NCT classes, endorsed by Gina Ford, and handed out in every new parent's Bounty bag. Read it for yourself, give it your partner, or get it for anyone you know who you suspect might be about to fall into the parent trap . . .

Someone Could Get Hurt

A sharp, funny, and heartfelt memoir about fatherhood and the ups and downs of raising a family in modern America No one writes about family quite like Drew Magary. The GQ correspondent and Deadspin columnist’s stories about trying to raise a family have attracted millions of readers online. And now he’s finally bringing that unique voice to a memoir. In Someone Could Get Hurt, he reflects on his own parenting experiences to explore the anxiety, rationalizations, compromises, and overpowering love that come with raising children in contemporary America. In brutally honest and funny stories, Magary reveals how American mothers and fathers cope with being in over their heads (getting drunk while trick-or-treating, watching helplessly as a child defiantly pees in a hotel pool, engaging in role-play with a princess-crazed daughter), and how stepping back can sometimes make all the difference (talking a toddler down from the third story of a netted-in playhouse, allowing children to make little mistakes in the kitchen to keep them from making the bigger ones in life). It’s a celebration of all the surprises—joyful and otherwise—that come with being part of a real family. In the wake of recent bestsellers that expose how every other culture raises their children better, Someone Could Get Hurt offers a hilarious and heartfelt defense of American child rearing with a glimpse into the genuine love and compassion that accompany the missteps and flawed logic. It’s the story of head lice, almost-dirty words, and flat head syndrome, and a man trying to commit the ultimate act of selflessness in a selfish world.

2010 PROSE Award Winner for Nursing & Allied Health Sciences! 2010 AJN Book of the Year Award Winner in Public Interest and Creative Works! "The accounts are vivid, colorful, descriptive, intense, and often horrific and give cross-sectional views of life in the trenches during this disasterÖThis book is a rich primary source for both historians and disaster preparedness planners. It's not only a tribute to the courage of the nurses, but should also serve as a guide for policy planners hoping to avoid less than optimal responses to future crises."--AJN "[T]he book...fascinates simply for its raw documentation of the dreadful events and conditions endured by nurses, doctors, and ancillary staff as they struggled to care for critically ill patients without electricity, running water, air conditioning systems, and other resources. Five years after the levees broke, the horror and chaos of Katrina is still fresh in these accounts. Through the stories, readers are transported into the hospitals as nurses heroically work together to evacuate babies from NICUs and vented patients from ICU, try to calm patients, family members, and coworkers, and make do with the equipment and supplies theyíve got."--National Nurse "Don't ever think that this can't happen to you. You are going to read this and it's going to sound like we created this scenario, but this is a real scenario that happened." --Pam, Memorial Medical Center "Everything that was battery operated eventually died. There were no monitors...we tried to take care of people in the most humane way possible." --Lois, Lindy Boggs Medical Center Nursing in the Storm: Voices from Hurricane Katrina takes you inside six New Orleans hospitals-cut off from help for days by flooding-where nurses cared for patients around the clock. In this book, nurses from Hurricane Katrina share what they did, how they coped, what they lost, and what they are doing now in a city and health care infrastructure still rebuilding, still in jeopardy. In their own words, the nurses tell what happened in each hospital just before, during, and after the storm. Danna and Cordray provide an intimate portrait of the experience of Katrina, which they and their colleagues endured. Just a few of the heroic nurses you'll find inside: Rae Ann and twenty others, including her husband and children, who wait on a hospital roof for help to come Lisa, in the midst of caring for patients, who has not heard from her husband in 5 days Roslyn, who has 800 people in her hospital when the power generators shut down Linda, who uses bed sheets to write out help messages on a hospital roof, hoping someone will see them The book also discusses how to plan and prepare for future disasters, with a closing chapter documenting the "lessons learned" from Katrina, including day-to-day health care delivery in a city of crisis. This groundbreaking work serves as a testament to nurses' professionalism, perseverance, and unwavering dedication.

Brady Allen Krebs was born on 2/28/12 at 5:41 p.m. He was 22 inches long and was 11 lbs. and 9 oz. When Brady was born, he wasn't breathing and didn't have a heartbeat. It took doctors and nurses about four minutes to resuscitate him. Brady was immediately transferred to the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children Hospital and stayed there for 6 weeks in their NICU. He went through hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) treatment. For HIE treatment Brady was placed on a cooling unit. His body temperature was kept around 90 degrees for three days. This was done to slow the body down and reduce swelling in the brain. Brady's brain scans found that he had brain injuries due to his lack of oxygen at birth. He was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and started OT and PT in the hospital. Brady also underwent surgery to receive a G-J tube to help with his feeding. Brady also had four stem cell procedures at Duke University Hospital between the ages of one and three. We banked his umbilical cord blood at birth and learned about a study to help babies with brain injuries. Brady is now 6-years-old. He attended Kindergarten this year and is in special education classes where he still receives OT, PT and speech therapy. Through the CaringBridge website, we have documented Brady's birth story from his time in the NICU, through his stem cell procedures, therapy appointments and beginning school. We hope that this book can help families like ours who are going through similar experiences. With love, Tyler, Ali, Ava, Casey and Brady Krebs
