Uncle Will of Wildwood is a warm and humorous memoir of the nineteenth-century Bluegrass that recalls a defining period of Kentucky's past. It was a time of self-sufficient country estates when, as Thomas D. Clark writes in his introduction, "every Bluegrass farm gate was the entryway into a ruggedly independent domain." Wildwood was such a place, ruled by the affable Uncle Will of this classic book. Everything at Wildwood revolved around Will Goddard, who was "a cross between a hurricane and an electric fan." Uncle Will -- with his mad dashes into Harrodsburg for mowing-machine parts, his habit of leaving his stallion Black Joe unhitched, his irrepressible spirit, and his uncanny perception of the potential of a horse -- became a family and community legend. A celebration of Kentucky before the arrival of the modern age, Uncle Will of Wildwood fondly remembers life before the automobile, before radio and television, and before growing cities eroded the quiet and grand way of country life. Though Uncle Will's story is nearly two hundred years old, his lessons of self-sufficiency, community, and eccentricity are still pertinent today. In print for the first time since 1974, Uncle Will of Wildwood captures the riotous spirit of one Kentucky man and the flavor of country life.

Here, published for the first time in the United States, is the last book by Roger Deakin, famed British nature writer and icon of the environmentalist movement. In Deakin's glorious meditation on wood, the "fifth element" -- as it exists in nature, in our culture, and in our souls -- the reader accompanies Deakin through the woods of Britain, Europe, Kazakhstan, and Australia in search of what lies behind man's profound and enduring connection with trees. Deakin lives in forest shacks, goes "coppicing" in Suffolk, swims beneath the walnut trees of the Haut-Languedoc, and hunts bushplums with Aboriginal women in the outback. Along the way, he ferrets out the mysteries of woods, detailing the life stories of the timber beams composing his Elizabethan house and searching for the origin of the apple. As the world's forests are whittled away, Deakin's sparkling prose evokes woodlands anarchic with life, rendering each tree as an individual, living being. At once a traveler's tale and a splendid work of natural history, Wildwood reveals, amid the world's marvelous diversity, that which is universal in human experience.

Commissioned on April 1, 1943, Naval Air Station Wildwood trained thousands of U.S. Navy airmen during World War II. Located in southern New Jersey on a peninsula bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay, the air station was perfectly sited to provide them with the over-water practice they needed for fighting the Japanese fleet in the western Pacific theater. Some of the war's most lethal bombers-Helldivers and TBM-3E Avengers among them-were flown by members of naval fighter, dive-bombing, and torpedo-bombing squadrons based at the station from 1943 until 1945. At least 42 airmen lost their lives while training at the station, but their deaths brought about improvements in airplane design and tactics. Today only a handful of the station's 126 original buildings remain; the largest of these, Hangar No. 1, has been restored to its original appearance and houses Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum.

A titan of industry employs inmates from his orphanage to work in his machine shop, all the while obsessing over the exploitation of the Impassable Wilderness. Francesca Wright, pictured here in her Santa Fe home at the age of 95, was born into abject poverty, the youngest in a family of nine children, in the Ozark Hills of Missouri in 1911. Her mother and siblings farmed a small parcel of depleted land while her father sought supplementary income as a painter of both structures and canvases. As a child, Francesca followed in her father's footsteps as he gathered bark and berries to mix for his paintings. Today, her acclaimed portraits and landscapes reside in prestigious art collections worldwide.Wildwood Days is the true story of Francesca's childhood. It is the story of her mother's tireless efforts to educate and empower her children in the face of grinding poverty, and of Francesca, at the age of twelve, finding herself left entirely alone for four long years-alone to manage her own survival as well as the crops, livestock and buildings of the family farm.In counterpoint to the genuine hardships, the myriad delightful characters and details which Francesca recalls-through the eyes of a child-make for a heartwarming, often quite funny, and altogether uplifting read. Francesca's tale ends with her fortuitous escape at age seventeen into a wider world, a new beginning to a long and distinguished career.
